ALTON – Heavy equipment from Meyer Contracting in Maple Grove, Minnesota was working Wednesday clearing trees and brush from the flood basin at the corner of Illinois 143 and Cpl. Chris Belchik Memorial Expressway in Alton.

The work is part of ongoing efforts to complete the $ 6.5 million Mel Price Flood Control Reach 1 project.

Overall work has been to construct relief wells for the Wood River Levee district to correct the under-seepage issues identified several years ago.

This phase of the project will focus on the low elevation area north of Illinois 143 and west of the Belchik intersection at the Discovery Parkway. A construction trailer and heavy equipment have been unloaded in an area near the Belchik railway viaduct for work on the project, which is expected to be completed by mid-August.
