WALTHAM, MA, July 7, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – via NewMediaWire – Tecogen Inc. (OTCQX: TGEN), a clean energy company providing ultra-efficient and clean on-site power, heating and cooling equipment, is pleased to announce the filing of an application for provisional patent entitled “High Efficiency Hybrid Motor – Variable Frequency Drive.” The application describes a new system to seamlessly mix multiple power sources in any combination through a single inverter. The system will allow building owners to power loads such as a cooling plant from an engine generator system, existing electric utility and / or solar and battery storage.

“We have developed the hybrid drive concept to enable sales in two key market segments including the air-cooled chiller market which is considerably larger than the water chiller market in our size range and n is currently not supported by our Tecochill® chillers, and an extended network edge solution, combining the most appropriate power source based on the preferences of system operators for cost, efficiency and environmental impacts, ”noted Robert Panora, President and COO of Tecogen.

The air-cooled chiller based on a hybrid drive will allow customers to achieve maximum savings while having the added benefit of the resiliency of multiple power sources. As the world moves towards a zero carbon future, many utilities are pushing micro-grid and grid edge solutions to reduce the load during peak hours. Tecogen is already a recognized leader in micro-grids, and the hybrid engine will allow grid-connected customers to seamlessly get rid of on-demand overload and receive utility payments for doing so.

Hybrid drive would also allow the use of many renewable sources such as rooftop solar systems in the event of a grid failure. In many cases, these systems are not configured to operate off the grid, but the hybrid drive would allow isolation from the grid as well as mixing of other power sources, if needed, without loss of efficiency. The system contemplates tapping into renewable sources when it is beneficial, including access to solar and wind power instead of the motor where appropriate, to achieve the optimal mix of affordable and clean energy.

“Customers are looking to maximize savings and resilience while choosing the greenest energy source,” noted Benjamin Locke, CEO of Tecogen. “As the electricity grid becomes greener and more renewable, and on-site power becomes more widespread, the natural gas engine input of hybrid propulsion can be used primarily for back-up power, with an integrated inverter and controls ensuring efficient coordination of all connected energy sources; and the system providing electricity in normal operation from renewable energy sources or other available energy sources. “
