Silk Cooperation, a supply chain management company in the organic and sustainable agriculture, food and beverage and nutraceutical sector, recently announced the opening of a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Naula, Matale, to produce a healthy range of vegan and plant-based products. .

These products are marketed and sold under the ‘plant-based’ brand and currently available for purchase in Glomark supermarkets island-wide and online via www.plantbased.lk with plans already underway to further improve the distribution reach, including an ambitious wholesale and export strategy. “With nearly a decade of experience in the food and agricultural export business, we are now preparing to explore new horizons. Our new facility was created with the goal of producing innovative vegan products that are healthy for consumers and sustainable for the planet, while creating a positive impact on the livelihoods of our local farmers and rural communities,” said Sahan Clive Bakmiwewa, CEO of Silk Cooperation.

Several greenhouses within the farm have also boosted its efficiency by equipping modern vertical agricultural irrigation systems such as the “Nutrient Film Technique” (NFT), a first of its kind in the Matale region.

Raw materials are sourced from local farmers adopting fair trade policies in addition to growing their own crops using organic farming principles, to ensure products are non-GMO and all natural. Farming communities also receive training and scientific know-how, with the aim of encouraging and sustaining a culture of collaboration with other actors throughout the value chain.

One of its products that is making waves is the plant-based vegan patty, made with baby jackfruit and oyster mushrooms as the main raw ingredients, combined with spices and coated in breadcrumbs and fried, serving up a perfect burger patty. precooked meat substitute.

The new facility is also able to manufacture oat and rice milk powder, facilitating the much needed substitution of cow’s milk powder for the local and international market, becoming the only facility in Sri Lanka currently manufacturing milk oats and rice powder.

The operations of the facility and farm will be outsourced to Silk Foods Ceylon Ltd., a subsidiary of E-Silk Route Ventures Ltd trading as Silk Cooperation.
