Residents of the Northwest Territories will benefit from improvements to local roads

YELLOW KNIFE, NT, July 23, 2021 / CNW / – The governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories recognize the different ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted communities across the territories. Both governments are making strategic investments in infrastructure to meet the unique needs of northern communities and strengthen their local economies.
Today, Michael McLeod, Member of Parliament for Northwest Territories, on behalf of the Honorable Maryam Monsef, Federal Minister for Women, Gender Equality and Rural Economic Development, and the Honorable Shane Thompson, Northwest Territories’ Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, announced the funding of 18 local road projects through the Northwest Territories.
The government of Canada invests on $ 37 million in these projects through the Rural and Northern Communities Infrastructures (ISDN) component of the Invest in Canada Plan. Northwest Territories’ Indigenous communities and beneficiaries provide more than $ 12.3 million towards these projects.
When completed, these significant improvements to local roads across the territory will help residents move safer and more efficiently and ensure a strong economic recovery that creates jobs and growth for Northerners.
All levels of government continue to work together to ensure that Northerners make strategic infrastructure investments in communities across the territory when they need it most.

- Under the Invest in Canada Plan, the federal government invests more than $ 180 billion over 12 years in public transport, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, trade routes and transportation projects, and from Canada rural and northern communities.
- To support Canadians and communities during the COVID-19 pandemic, a new component has been added to the $ 33 billion Invest in Canada Infrastructure program to help finance infrastructure resilient to pandemics. The existing program strands have also been adapted to include more categories of eligible projects.
- Through Canada, since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the government of Canada contributed $ 9.7 billion to 3,500 infrastructure projects.
- Under the Invest in Canada Plan, the federal government has invested funds in improving more than 4,100 km of roads across the country. Among these improvements, nearly 100 km of roads were built or repaired in the Northwest Territories.
