Road closed between Rymal and Highland due to major residential fire

A fire ripped through a new development on Stoney Creek Mountain on Monday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the construction site near Soho Street near Rymal Road and the Upper Red Hill Valley Parkway at 4 p.m.

Firefighters arrived to find a huge fire burning in several homes under construction, Hamilton Fire Department Chief David Cunliffe said.

Cunliffe said “a total of 23 units at various stages of construction were consumed by the fire”.

Initial damage estimates are in the order of $10 million.

Speaking at the scene of the fire, Cunliffe also said 12 occupied homes “adjacent to the fire” were damaged. But “for the most part, these are windows shattered by the heat”.

North of the blaze, balconies of occupied homes were starting to catch fire from the heat, he said.

Residents of occupied units could be seen fighting fires in planters and grass with garden hoses.

Several vehicles and construction machinery that were on the site or parked in the adjacent street were damaged or destroyed.

Around 6 p.m., Cunliffe said the blaze was under control but firefighters were continuing to hose down hot spots. In an update at 8:30 p.m., he suggested they would still be there overnight.

Firefighters deployed three aerial units, along with handlines to tackle the vast site.

Area resident Courtney Green was alarmed by the sounds coming from the fire.

“I heard popping and I thought, ‘What was that? I thought that was weird. I was sitting on my back patio and saw that the townhouse perpendicular to mine was completely submerged. I’ve never seen anything like it,” she said.

She saw other neighbors running to other houses to make sure they and their pets got out.

No injuries were reported and all residents of the occupied houses were expected to return home on Monday.

The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal has been advised to assist in the investigation with Hamilton Police into the cause.

First responders have closed the Upper Red Hill Valley Parkway between Rymal and Highland Roads due to the fire. Upper Mount Albion Road was also closed south of Highland.

Alectra reported that 2,383 customers in the fire area were without power as of 5:30 p.m. They expected power to be restored by 9 p.m.
