Hillsborough County ranks in the top 25 counties in Florida for traffic crashes that result in serious or fatal injury to pedestrians and cyclists.

To reverse this trend, the sheriff’s office is participating in a high-visibility enforcement program to teach people about Florida traffic laws and try to improve safety.

They set up 24 enforcement points with increased traffic patrols.

Law enforcement will be on the lookout for dangerous driving behaviors including speeding, failing to yield to pedestrians, improper turns and using cell phones while driving.

MPs will also monitor pedestrians who cross the street illegally or fail to yield to motorists who have the right of way.

Cyclists will be arrested for riding against the current, riding at night without lights or failing to obey the same laws as motor vehicles.

Where appropriate, MPs will issue warnings and citations. Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister says it’s about raising awareness to ultimately increase road safety.

Last year, more than 800 people were killed in the Greater Tampa Bay Area, according to data from Signal Four Analytics.

In 2022, this trend has increased by 28% in Hillsborough County.

Increased patrols will run until May next year.
