GMC Hummer EV’s maximum towing rating is lower than that of the Chevy Colorado

No one buys a 1,000 horsepower GMC Hummer EV to tow construction equipment with, at least not to my knowledge. Still, generally speaking, towing is an important task for any pickup. This is what makes the Ultium Battery Truck’s 7,500-pound maximum towing capacity so attractive, especially when you compare it to other rigs both within and outside of its relatively new class.

The note was announced by GMC Global Vice President Duncan Aldred last week alongside the announcement of the truck’s 329-mile range. If you pit it exclusively against electric pickups, that’s a steal behind the Rivian R1T’s 11,000-pound rating. That’s also a drop of over a ton for the Ford F-150 Lightning, which can pull 10,000 pounds according to the Blue Oval. While none of these EVs can outperform their traditional half-ton gasoline counterparts, they’re still capable of towing a reasonably sized tandem-axle travel trailer – the Hummer is just closer to its limit in doing so.

Switch to the performance truck segment and the Hummer still belongs to the Ford F-150 Raptor and the Ram TRX. These appear to be the GMC’s most suitable rivals, even though they run on fossil fuels. The Raptor, with its twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6, can pull up to 8,200 pounds; meanwhile, the Ram sits just below at 8,100 pounds.

Notably, the maximum payload capacity of the 1,300-pound Hummer EV is roughly comparable to that of the Ram TRX, although a little lower than the Raptor’s 1,400-pound mark. With a declared curb weight of 9,046 pounds, the Hummer’s platform must hold an enormous amount, even when unloaded.

The Hummer EV is more comparable to midsize trucks, at least from a towing standpoint. It beats the Nissan Frontier and matches the Ford Ranger, but it reverts to the Jeep Gladiator and the Chevy Colorado. In its most workable form, the Gladiator can pull 7650 pounds, giving it a 150 pound advantage over the Hummer. As for Colorado, it tops out at 7,700. It’s not much more, of course, but it’s still official.

One of the towing technologies that the Hummer and the others have is not the trailer-compatible hands-free Super Cruise. A GM representative confirmed this feature to The reader previously, making it one of three models to offer equipment alongside the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. It will also power your motorhome on the go, allowing it to start your air conditioner before arriving in. a campsite so that it is cool when you settle down.

As you can see, the Hummer is more about going fast and looking cool than carrying a whole bunch. And that’s okay, just know what’s most important to you when writing that check.
